The final round of the Irish Nationals was held this past weekend on the astroturf track in Navan. The weather played its usual games with drivers as sunscreen was needed for Saturday, and a wet suit for Sunday. Qualifying proved to be a mix for a lot of drivers, as the freshly laid astro played out as a tricky obstacle of its own. Alan Scroggie took TQ with impressive runs throughout qualifying.
For the final, it decided to empty down with standing water appearing in parts of the track the first few laps would be a case of avoiding dipping in and out of the puddles. Scroggie never looked back, as he gave himself a commanding lead by the half way point in the 45 minute race. He continued to put in “machine like laps ” right to the end, where he took a very impressive win. Gary Baird had a glitch at the start and lost a little time, however drove a fantastic 2nd half to the race to catch Barkley and finish 2nd, with Barkley finishing 3rd.
The overall Irish National title goes to Gary Baird, one point ahead of Alan Scroggie in second and Barkley Abernathy in third.
